The Thornbury and District Community Association was not always based in the Chantry. It was started in 1963 by a group who saw the need for groups of people to meet in the town. They met in each other’s houses and in what was the Picture House in the High Street and the Cossham Hall. Seeing the need for a permanent base because of Thornbury being a rapidly growing town, the Chantry was duly purchased.

Volunteers worked tirelessly to make the building fit for purpose and we are grateful to them for their amazing legacy. Who else in the country has a beautiful 15, 18 and 19th century building and garden as a Community Centre?

Collectors and Craft Fair.

This year’s Fair will be on Saturday 8th December so if you are having a Spring clear-out remember that you can bring your unwanted items at any time for us to sell on our stall to make money for the refurbishment and repair of your Chantry.

The fabrics sold well, and made over £100 so if you have been hoarding them as I did then this might just be the time to send them in to us to find new homes and for them to enrich someone else’s life!

Any Collectors or Crafters out there who are interested in having a stall with us this year can register an interest now to be contacted nearer the time.

We desperately need new toilets as the old ones are about 50 years old! We have just received a grant of £1,100 from the Town Council, but we need £3,000 altogether just for the main house. Any ideas? Any Plumbers?

The Bar

A group of volunteers are currently refurbishing the Chantry Bar sympathetically as it is a Georgian building at the bar end and a Victorian building at the other.

Sustainable Thornbury are currently advising us about the replacement lighting in the building to make our energy consumption more efficient.
