The Chantry is a fine listed
building located in the conservation area of Castle Street, Thornbury. It dates
from the late 16th/early 17th Century. The name for the
house suggests it was once a home for priests who were paid by people to chant
masses for their souls.
The house was extended in the
18th century and a conservatory added in the 19th, the
entrance to which is served by a stone doorway thought to have come originally
from Thornbury Castle. The Chantry was used as a farm for many years. The old
stable block and coach house, whose central archways are still visible in the
outer wall, is now converted into a hall/theatre. With its panelled rooms and
elegant windows the Chantry still maintains the atmosphere of an historic house,
complete some say, with its own ghost!
